Each month, we will be featuring a different non-profit organization that serves children and donate a portion of proceeds from all orders that month.
October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In honor of this, we have chosen to feature and support the Center for a Nonviolent Community in Sonora, CA. This center has been serving the community since 1997. They provide a variety of services to women, men, teens, and children including but not limited to: transitional housing for up to two years for survivors of domestic violence, prevention programs in an effort to prevent trauma (child molestation, bullying, harassment, sexual assault, and suicide), and counseling by licensed therapists to children who suffer from trauma. They also have a 24-hour crisis line and provide support to men and women fleeing dangerous situations.
The effects witnessing domestic violence has on children are profound. From behavioral changes (depression, nightmares, bedwetting, low self-esteem, becoming parentified -- to name a few), to being statistically more likely to choose a violent partner (or multiple violent partners) in their teen and adult lives. Counseling, like that provided by the center, can help mitigate the effects on children.
